Gout
Podagra
Tophi
A painful arthritic condition resulting from buildup of excessive uric acid in the blood, leading to severe joint pains. Most commonly affected joint is base of great toe (Podagra), other commonly affects joints are knees, ankles, wrists, fingers. Diagnosis is established typically by history, physical exam and checking uric acid level in blood. Occasionally an arthrocentesis (joint tap) maybe needed to firmly establish diagnosis by visualizing crystals under a microscope and rule out similar conditions. Best way to prevent gout is hydrating well, maintaining a healthy weight to reduce joint pressure and consume a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy. Avoid foods high in purines such as red meat, shellfish, and alcohol which can trigger a gout attack. Typical attack of gout is treated with one of 3 types of medications (Colchicine, Steroids or NSAIDS "anti-inflammatory" ). Recurrent attacks of gout can lead to tophi (tophaceous gout). Medications aimed to reduce uric acid level (allopurinol or Febuxostat (Uloric)) are an effective way to prevent gout. Once you have a gout attack it is very important to establish long-term prevention and treatment goals with your doctor as recurrent attacks can lead to permanent joint damage.
