Vitamin D Deficiency
Vitamin D plays several crucial roles in maintaining overall health. It is a fat-soluble vitamin that the body produces when exposed to sunlight, which is the predominant source. There are very few dietary sources (fatty fish, cod liver oil, fortified milk, orange juice, cereals, egg yolks, cheese). Vitamin D is essential for bone health, immune system support, mind, brain and heart health, reduction of inflammation and blood sugar regulation. It is surprisingly common, even in sunny Florida. Many people may not realize that factors like lifestyle, skin type, and sun exposure can impact their vitamin D levels. It's essential to be aware of this issue and consider getting your levels checked to ensure you're maintaining optimal health. Don't let the sunshine fool you; staying informed is key! Adults who do not have regular, effective sun exposure year-round should consume at least 600 to 800 international units (15 to 20 micrograms) of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) daily (total diet plus supplement). Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is also an option for treatment for those that preferred plant-based product, though slightly less effective. If you have a very low level of Vit D you may need high dose treatment until levels improve before going on maintenance dose. Those with absorption issues and history of gastric bypass surgery are especially prone to low Vit D levels. Talk to your provider about getting tested and appropriate treatment.
