Obesity is defined as BMI (body mass index) of greater than 30.  Many factors play a role in obesity including diet, physical inactivity, genetics, various medical conditions (hypothyroidism, PCOS), medications (steroids), psychological (stress, emotional eating, mood disorders). Obesity leads to many complications such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, joint problems, obstructive sleep apnea. Diet and exercise are the best ways to combat obesity. Medications for treating obesity can be an effective part of a comprehensive weight management plan, particularly when lifestyle changes alone are not sufficient. GLP-1 agonists such as Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) or GLP-1/GIP agonists such as Tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) are an effective way to treat obesity by suppressing appetite. They also confer many cardiovascular benefits. In clinical trials, people taking Semaglutide or Tirzepatide for weight management have seen a weight reduction of about 10-15% of their body weight over 6 months to a year. Talk to your provider about these treatment options if you have difficulty losing weight.
